The Evil Eye In Islam - How to Protect From Evil Eye?

When a person harms another with his or her eye, it is known as the evil eye. It begins when a person likes something, and then it is affected by his evil feelings as a result of his repeated looking at the object of his jealousy.

What Is the Evil Eye?

The evil eye is caused by someone looking at another with admiration. Even if you aren't jealous of them or anything, if you see something you admire in someone else, you can give them the evil eye and have that thing destroyed.

For Example : A newlywed couple who just had a baby might get the evil eye from someone who came over and liked their home decor or thought the baby was very cute. From their admiration of the beauty in their lives, the visitor could pass on the evil eye.

Protection From the Evil Eye with Dua

  • Prayer of Ibraheem (AS)

“A’udhu bi kalimatil-lahil- tammati, min kulli shaitanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah (I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye)”. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

For his sons and for his grandchildren, Prophet Ibraheem (as) and Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to say this dua.

As Muslim parents and caregivers, we should try to say this dua for our kids every day, even if they can say other duas against the evil eye on their own. This dua is especially for kids.

  • Dua of Jibril (AS)

“Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin aw hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika (In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allah heal you. In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you)”. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

This is a prayer that angel Jibril (as) performed on Prophet Muhammad (saw) when he was ill. This shows that this prayer may be more of a healing for the evil eye, and not necessarily a protection against it.

This is handy for us to know and be able to recite so that it can be beneficial if one ever feels as if they could be afflicted with the evil eye. Although there are various ways of treating the evil eye and anyone who feels afflicted should always consult a local Imam for assistance.

How to Keep the Evil Eye away From You

  • Bathing for the Evil eye

As a cure for the evil eye, Muhammad (S) outlined one method. He explained that the person who is the source of the evil eye should perform wudu. The wudu water should then be poured on the person who has been afflicted with the evil eye. That, if Allah's will be done, would cure it.

The Prophet (PBUH) said in a Hadith from Sahih Muslim that if someone asks them to take a bath as a cure for the evil eye, they should do so.

  • The Ruqyah's immense Benefits

It is said in a Hadith in Jami at-Tirmidhi that Angel Jibril came to the Prophet (PBUH) and asked him if he was suffering. Muhammad (S) replied in the affirmative. Jibril then said that he would recite Ruqyah over him, to protect him from evils of people and the evil eye.

There are a few different Sunnah methods of performing the Ruqyah. In all of them, you must begin and end with the Durood (three times). In between, you may say Surah al-Fatiha seven times. Another longer version of the Ruqyah requires you to recite Ayat al-Kursi three times in between as well. The longest version requires Muslims to recite the last three Surahs as well, three times each; Surah Ikhlaas, Falaq, and Nas.

  • Jealousy is not always Required for the Evil eye

We must remember that the person who casts the evil eye does not have to be envious or jealous. If anyone sees something in himself, his possessions, or his brother, he should pray for blessings, according to the Prophet (PBUH).
As a result, self-admiration may even be the source of the evil eye. If a person admires himself or his possessions too much, he can harm himself. As a result of admiring family members or their possessions, a person may inflict the evil eye on them.

A Muslim can seek protection from the evil eye by saying Allah humma baarik feehee (for a man) and Allah humma baarik feehaa (for a woman). This way, the person saying this supplicates for blessings for the person being admired.

Spiritual Things for Muslims to do on Friday in Islam

Friday is a special day for Muslims around the world because Allah gives many blessings and goodness on thi day. On Friday, a Muslim is required to perform a Friday prayer at the mosque. All Muslims gathered together to carry out Allah’s commands. In addition, that day the Prophet Adam was created and put into heaven. Even Prophet Adam was also expelled from heaven on Friday, and the apocalypse will not happen on from this. There are many Sunnah activities and things to do on Friday that we can do so we get many rewards from Allah.

1- Wash up Properly

1- Wash up Properly

As Friday is no ordinary day, one must take extra care when it comes to cleanliness and preparation for it. On this day, every Muslim should take a bath, trim his/her nails, brush his/her teeth, wear clean and freshly pressed clothes, along with a dash of nice perfume (non-alcoholic). All this is ideally to be practiced before the Jumuah prayer in terms of the significance.

The Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said:

“Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath. (Sahih Bukhari 2133)”

2 – Listen to the Sermon and Offer Friday Prayers in Congregation

2 – Listen to the Sermon and Offer Friday Prayers in Congregation

It is urged that all male individuals should finish up the worldly affairs a bit early on Friday and take some time off so that they can reach the Masjid well before time.

The Jumuah Khutbah (Friday sermon) is the Sunnah and essential for all to hear. It’s importance is illustrated in the following hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

“On every Friday the angels take their stand at every gate of the mosque to write the names of the people chronologically (i.e. according to the time of their arrival for the Friday prayer) and when the Imam sits (on the pulpit) they fold up their scrolls and get ready to listen to the sermon. (Al-Bukhari)”

Moreover, every Muslim male is obligated to offer the Friday prayers in congregation. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) says:

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. (Surah Jumah:9)

3- Make abundant Du’as

3- Make abundant Du’as

According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

“On Friday, there is a time when no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allah for something, but Allah will grant him it.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

So make du’a as much as you can on this day and avail this wonderful chance to get your Dua’s answered by the Almighty.

4- Recite Surah Kaa’hf

4- Recite Surah Kaa’hf

This Surah helps one expatiate from sins, gain blessings of Allah Almighty and prepare one’s self for the end of days. Hence, every Muslim individual must try getting into the habit of reciting Surah al Kahf regularly. Consciously take out time during the day to recite Surah Kaa’hf because according to Prophet’s (PBUH) tradition:

“Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on Friday, he will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays”. (Sunan Al-Kubra 5856)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is also reported to have said:

"If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal." (Sahih Muslim)

5- Send Blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH)

5- Send Blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH)

Along with constant remembrance of Allah (SWT), increased blessings should also be sent upon our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Friday, for it is stated in the Hadith:

“The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam was created; on that day he died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown; and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me. (Abu Dawud)”

Follow these tips and make that extra effort on every Jumuah. Look forward to Jumuah, be prepared for it in advance and go that extra mile to drape the cape of Allah’s blessings and rewards.

May Allah (SWT) bestow all our fellow Muslims with the motivation to practice all this continuously!

  Surah Mulk In Arabic

With English Translation

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. Blessed be He in Whose hands is Dominion; and He over all things hath Power;-
  2. He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving;-
  3. He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?
  4. Again turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out.
  5. And we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
  6. For those who reject their Lord (and Cherisher) is the Penalty of Hell: and evil is (such), Destination.
  7. When they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath even as it blazes forth,
  8. Almost bursting with fury: Every time a Group is cast therein, its Keepers will ask, "Did no Warner come to you?"
  9. They will say: "Yes indeed; a Warner did come to us, but we rejected him and said, ´Allah never sent down any (Message): ye are nothing but an egregious delusion!´"
  10. They will further say: "Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we should not (now) be among the Companions of the Blazing Fire!"
  11. They will then confess their sins: but far will be (Forgiveness) from the Companions of the Blazing Fire!
  12. As for those who fear their Lord unseen, for them is Forgiveness and a great Reward.
  13. And whether ye hide your word or publish it, He certainly has (full) knowledge, of the secrets of (all) hearts.
  14. Should He not know,- He that created? and He is the One that understands the finest mysteries (and) is well-acquainted (with them).
  15. It is He Who has made the earth manageable for you, so traverse ye through its tracts and enjoy of the Sustenance which He furnishes: but unto Him is the Resurrection.
  16. Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?
  17. Or do ye feel secure that He Who is in Heaven will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones), so that ye shall know how (terrible) was My warning?
  18. But indeed men before them rejected (My warning): then how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)?
  19. Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things.
  20. Nay, who is there that can help you, (even as) an army, besides (Allah) Most Merciful? In nothing but delusion are the Unbelievers.
  21. Or who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision? Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth).
  22. Is then one who walks headlong, with his face grovelling, better guided,- or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way?
  23. Say: "It is He Who has created you (and made you grow), and made for you the faculties of hearing, seeing, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give.
  24. Say: "It is He Who has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered together."
  25. They ask: When will this promise be (fulfilled)? - If ye are telling the truth.
  26. Say: "As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone: I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public."
  27. At length, when they see it close at hand, grieved will be the faces of the Unbelievers, and it will be said (to them): "This is (the promise fulfilled), which ye were calling for!"
  28. Say: "See ye?- If Allah were to destroy me, and those with me, or if He bestows His Mercy on us,- yet who can deliver the Unbelievers from a grievous Penalty?"
  29. Say: "He is (Allah) Most Gracious: We have believed in Him, and on Him have we put our trust: So, soon will ye know which (of us) it is that is in manifest error."
  30. Say: See ye?- If your stream be some morning lost (in the underground earth), who then can supply you with clear-flowing water?
